Medical Research on Sauna Benefits

Scientific evidence supporting sauna therapy for various health conditions.

Cardiovascular Health Benefits
Research on sauna therapy for heart and blood vessel conditions.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Frequent sauna use lowers blood pressure through vasodilation and reduced peripheral resistance. A Finnish cohort study of approximately 1,600 participants found that men using sauna 4–7 times per week had about 50% lower risk of developing hypertension over 25 years compared to those using it once per week.

Key Research Findings

  • 1
Adjusted hazard ratio of approximately 0.54 for frequent sauna users compared to infrequent users
  • 2
Heat causes blood vessels to dilate and increases cardiac output, mimicking aerobic exercise
  • 3
Meta-analysis supports modest blood pressure reduction with regular sauna use

Heart Disease & Heart Failure

Sauna bathing improves vascular function and exercise tolerance in heart disease. In chronic heart failure patients, trials using far-infrared saunas showed improved ejection fraction, reduced BNP hormone levels, and longer 6-minute walk distances.

Key Research Findings

  • 1
Men with 4–7 sauna visits per week had only 23% the risk of fatal cardiovascular events compared to once per week users
  • 2
Heat reduces preload/afterload, improves endothelial nitric oxide production, and may modulate sympathetic tone
  • 3
Small randomized controlled trials report improved cardiac function and symptoms

Stroke Risk

In a Finnish population study, higher sauna frequency was linked to significantly lower stroke risk. After adjusting for age and risk factors, those using sauna 4–7 times per week had approximately 70% lower risk of stroke compared to once-weekly users.
